UrbanFarmers are an innovative, award winning company with a very strong ethos. We grow high quality foods right in the heart of the town, keeping things 'local'. We can then provide local jobs and skills training which benefits the local community. Our innovative production methods also help in reducing local waste and creating a cascading system of products, where the waste from each product, becomes the 'supply' for next.
If you live in or around Southend-on-sea, contact us about adding our fantastic mushrooms to your menu...at home or in your restaurant!

Helping local businesses reduce their carbon footprint
One of our functions is to assist local cafes and restaurants in reducing their waste and to lower their carbon footprint.
We collect fresh used coffee grounds, which would otherwise be discarded into the waste stream and more often than not become land fill. (see note). These are then mixed in a special way and put through two growing stages. Within 5-6 weeks we have then produced our very special, highly nutritious and immensely tasty, locally grown, gourmet Oyster Mushrooms.
That is not the end of the story however, as our spent substrate itself becomes the source material for the next product and so on and so on. More details to come.
{Note: As well as taking up valuable land space, landfill disposal of organic material leads to an anaerobic decomposition of the used coffee, which then releases carbon dioxide and methane- both harmful greenhouse gases.]

Gourmet mushrooms locally grown
Currently only 0.2% of the nutritional and biomass value of the coffee bean is utilised when it is used solely for consumption through drinking, with the remainder being discarded to landfill.
This results in huge amounts of green house gases created via anaerobic activity releasing large amounts of Carbon Dioxide (CO2) and Methane (CH4).
At UrbanFarmers we prevent this discard from reaching landfill and use 100% of this biomass.
Our principle product, created from the collected waste coffee grounds is the Pleurotus ostreatus- the Oyster Mushroom which thrives, under set conditions, on this coffee waste.
